THE IMPORTANCE OF LIVE EXPOSURE
LOCAL LIVE EXPOSURE How important is touring and gigging to getting your band recognized? Apart from Radio airplay it’s probably the most effective thing you can do to get your band recognized by a mass group of people. Mass groups of people means mass amounts of money. Word of mouth about your music in conjunction with Radio & a solid live presentation is a very powerful thing. Popularity is a contagious thing especially among teenagers. But for new bands, artists, playing live will probably not be very lucrative venture at first. It’s so true that you have to start somewhere, and you must prove yourself on a smaller scale before you can do it on a much larger one. It can also be said that before you conquer the world, you must first conquer a city or locale first. Below are just a few things you can do to start conquering the local live circuit. .
- Deliver a solid live presentation (5-10 times a month) - Release an industry standard CD. - Always have CD’s for sale at the merch table. - Start assembling a street team to get the word out about your band. - Start networking with other regional bands to play shows together. The bigger the band the bigger the contact. - Start making good impressions on local bookers, and club owners, and regional booking agencies. - Build your solid reputation one venue, one show, one fan at a time. - Begin building your serious draw and buzz factor round your music. - Submit your CD to all the popular local and college radio stations. Garage Band format may be the best you can hope for unless you know someone on the inside. - Do all of the above consistently for one year - Join a Local Booking Agency .
THE INDIE VENUE BIBLE The Indie Venue Bible is a unique, comprehensive directory of live music venues. It is in electronic (.pdf) format and lists 32,000 VENUES and 3,500 BOOKING AGENTS in the US and Canada. The listings are arranged by area, making it easier for you to route and plan your tour. The Indie Venue Bible is constantly being updated. You will have access to the newest version for ONE FULL YEAR! We list the obvious venues that you can find in any venue directory. What sets us apart from the others are the lesser known venues that you won't find listed anywhere else.
INTERNATIONAL TOURING So you've conquered the local club circuit. There are at least 10 clubs within your city or locale that you have a solid reputation with. So now you or perhaps 2 to 3 other bands want to do something bigger & more lucrative together. Perhaps do a 100 city tour along the West Coast either as a headliner or in support of another band or artist. This is a huge logistical undertaking to execute effectively. If you've decided you're ready to commit to something like a regional tour tour there are a few things you should consider.
- In which geographic area and at what specific cities and venues do you want to perform? What is your tentative itinerary? - What specific performing needs do you have in terms of instruments and musical equipment? - What specific stage, sound engineers, and lighting needs do you have? - How much equipment will the band bring along, and how much will you need to have ready at the venue? - How many crew members will you need to have on site, and what skills or training do they need? - What's your tentative budget for the tour, including employee pay and equipment costs? - What are your limits in tour length and number of shows? - Do you have 2 or 3 more popular bands that want to come along to add to the attractiveness of the bill?
TOURING AGENCIES Below is a list of some professional Booking, Event, and/or Touring Agencies available for hire by Labels, and established Independent artists. These companies can help you organize your very own regional tour. Various price packages are available based on your experience level, draw potential, and other factors. It certainly helps if you have an established fan base, a finely tuned live performance, with full live support, and sound crew already in place. It's also safe to say if you don't have some of the aforementioned, then you have no business contacting them as you are still in your developmental phase.
