Music Placement - do we need the Middleman

Many independent composers don’t have access to labels and publishing companies to pitch their music to producers. Music Placement Companies help fill the void. These Companies represent the music of independent artists and composers to the film and TV communities. This is one angle some artist seem to like like, however there are some things to consider. These Companies serve as a middleman between he artist & the Music Supervisors. This service comes at a price – say 50% of all money made with licensing goes to this company. Also Music Supervisors look for that piece of music that is independent. Music Placement Companies now have their claws on your music as well, crating more red tape for the Supervisor and less money for you. Just like the Stock Market – you can either commission a stockbroker or go it alone. Remember when you make money you always pay the stockbroker first. Some Artists are intimidated, and unmotivated to do the legwork these placement companies do. Yes: Music Supervisor do shop and search through these companies for their music. But based on the conversations I’ve had with a few Music Supervisors most artist ca do the same things these companies do if they did a little homework first. One approach - send your music directly to a Music Supervisor first, if you get no deal on the table then commission the use of one of these placement companies.
