Final Thoughts - The Movie Music Supervisor
Music Supervisors for TV and Film productions are alot different from traditional Music A&R’s. There are literally missions if bands out there trying to get recognition, but there are a limited amount of artists dedicated to making music marketable for TV & Movie productions. Because of this Movie Supervisors are a lot easier to solicit to and approach. The Movie Supervisor I spoke with said she never throws away good demos that come across her desk, because one day she may need a song at the last minute to make a production deadline. She dedicates one day a week listening to all the Promo Packs received that week – say 30 seconds per song, then files away. She only keeps the ones that are at industry standard and files them appropriately based on their musical genera. When a Producer tasks her to find the right piece of music for the right scene she goes hunting through these reserve files for a suitable music of piece. This guarantees the right song, for the right scene, for the right producer. When it gets approved by the Producer she then begins the negotiation process with the artist for subsequent licensing.
